The Side Project Formula: Build Something Profitable This Weekend
No-code tools and AI have made it cheaper than ever to launch a product. The only thing standing between you and a profitable side project is picking the right problem to solve. Here's the exact framework.
Every successful side project I've ever seen started the same way: someone got annoyed enough to build their own fix.
Not a clever idea from a pitch deck. Not a billion-dollar market they dreamed up. Just a boring, everyday annoyance at work that they automated away — and then realized other people had the same problem and would pay for the solution.
The Formula
It's embarrassingly simple:
- Find something annoying at work. The spreadsheet you rebuild every week. The manual report your boss asks for. The workflow that takes three tools and two copy-paste steps to complete.
- Build the simplest fix. Use no-code tools — Airtable, Make (formerly Integromat), Bubble, or even just a well-written GPT agent. Zero engineering degree required.
- Sell it to people with the same problem. They exist. Every industry has the same recurring annoyances. Post it in a niche community. Someone will pay $10–$30/month not to deal with that spreadsheet ever again.
- Repeat. One side project teaches you everything about the next one — distribution, pricing, support loops. Each one gets easier.
Why This Works in 2026
Two things changed in the last 18 months that make this formula almost unfair:
1. AI eliminates the "too hard to build" excuse. You can now describe what you want in plain English, and an AI agent will scaffold the entire app. Need a database? Just ask. Need an API? Describe the endpoint. The technical barrier has collapsed.
2. No-code toolchains are production-ready. Platforms like Bubble, WeWeb, and FlutterFlow can handle real traffic, real payments, and real users. You're not building a toy — you're building a business.
3. Distribution is cheaper than ever. Niche communities on Reddit, Hacker News, Mastodon, and Slack workspaces are hungry for tools that make their specific job easier. You don't need a marketing budget. You need one post in the right place.
Where to Find Ideas
Your inbox is a goldmine. Every email that says "Can you send me the updated version of X?" or "I need this by Friday" is a potential product. The thing you're doing manually right now? Someone else is doing it too.
Also: work in public. When I started sharing screenshots of the little automations I built for our agency, people started DM'ing me asking if they could buy the tool. That's how the best products are born — not from a whiteboard, but from someone asking "Can I have that too?"
The Real Barrier Isn't Technical
It's not having the skills. It's not having the time. It's not having the idea.
The real barrier is convincing yourself that the boring, obvious problem in front of you is worth solving. It is. The most profitable SaaS companies in the world started as internal tools for someone's annoying spreadsheet.
So this weekend: pick one thing that annoys you. Automate it. Ship it. Charge for it. The ideas are already sitting in your inbox. 🚀
