The Only 3 AI Tools You Actually Need as a Solopreneur
You don't need 47 tools. You need three you actually use daily. Here's the stack that covers 90% of what a solo business actually needs from AI.
The Tool Hoarding Problem
There are approximately 12,000 AI tools on the market right now. New ones launch every day. Most solopreneurs react to this by signing up for everything, using none of it, and feeling vaguely guilty about the $147/month they're burning on subscriptions they forgot to cancel.
The alternative: stop treating AI tools like a buffet and start treating them like a toolkit. You don't need a specialized wrench for every bolt. You need three tools that cover three jobs — and you need to actually use them.
Tool 1: A Writing Engine (Claude)
Every solopreneur writes — proposals, emails, social posts, landing pages, pitch decks. Claude is the best general-purpose writing engine on the market right now. Not because it's flashy, but because it produces clean, human-sounding prose that doesn't need three rounds of de-AI-ification before you can send it.
The key: use Claude for rough drafts, not final copy. Feed it your voice, your audience, your constraints. Then edit. The magic isn't in hitting "generate" — it's in cutting your writing time from 2 hours to 20 minutes and spending the difference on polish.
Tool 2: A Research Assistant (Perplexity)
ChatGPT hallucinates. Google gives you ten blue links and a wall of SEO spam. Perplexity gives you cited answers with sources you can actually check. For market research, competitor analysis, technical questions, or "what's the current state of X" — it's the fastest way from question to verified answer.
One solopreneur I work with uses Perplexity instead of hiring a junior analyst. She researches adjacent markets, validates pricing assumptions, and pulls industry stats for investor updates — all in minutes instead of days. The $20/month Pro plan pays for itself on the first research session.
Tool 3: An Automation Layer (Make + OpenAI)
This is where the real leverage lives. Make (formerly Integromat) is a visual automation platform that connects your tools — Gmail, Slack, Airtable, Stripe, whatever you use — and OpenAI's API provides the brains. Together they handle the repetitive work that eats your afternoons.
Examples: auto-categorizing inbound emails and drafting responses, generating weekly client reports from raw data, transcribing and summarizing meeting recordings into action items. Each one saves 3-8 hours a week. Combined, you get a day back.
What's Not On This List
AI schedulers. AI video editors. AI logo generators. AI podcast clip extractors. AI LinkedIn comment bots. All of these solve problems you don't actually have — or solve them worse than the non-AI alternative. The seduction of AI tools is that they seem free ("just $29/month!"). The cost is your attention, your learning curve, and the complexity you're adding to a business that needs simplicity.
Three tools. Use them daily. Turn off the rest. Your business will run better and your credit card statement will thank you.
