The Real Reason Small Businesses Stay Small
2026-06-21 · Michael B
Most small business owners are the most expensive employee in their own company — and they do not realize it. They do work worth twenty dollars an hour while strategic opportunities worth thousands sit untouched.
The Bottleneck Test
Try this: for one week, track every task you personally complete. Then categorize each one: strategic (only you can do this), delegable (someone else could do this), or automatable (a machine could do this).
Most owners discover that 60-70% of their time falls into the delegable or automatable categories. That is the bottleneck.
Why Owners Stay Stuck
It is faster to do it yourself. You know how. Training someone takes time you do not have. And the person might do it wrong. So you keep doing it. This is the trap.
The trap is rational in the short term and catastrophic in the long term. Every hour you spend on work that could be delegated or automated is an hour not spent on growth, relationships, strategy, or rest.
Breaking Free
Pick one category of work. The least strategic, most repetitive thing you do. Document it. Hand it off. Accept that it will be done differently — maybe worse at first — and do not take it back. Give it thirty days.
Then pick the next thing. And the next. This is how owners become executives.
