The Only AI Stack a Solopreneur Actually Needs in 2026

2026-06-22 · Michael B

Walk into any solopreneur's browser and you will find the same graveyard: seven tabs of AI tools, four active subscriptions, two they forgot to cancel, and one they are pretty sure they are still in the free trial for. The total bill? Somewhere between $80 and $300 a month. The actual usage? They prompt ChatGPT Plus five times a week and maybe generate a header image in Canva.

This is not a productivity stack. It is an anxiety stack — a collection of subscriptions that feel like progress but mostly just charge your card.

The Three-Piece Stack

You need exactly three things. Not ten. Not seven. Three.

One LLM API key. Not ChatGPT Plus. Not Claude Pro. An actual API key — OpenAI, Anthropic, whichever model you prefer. Cost: roughly $20 per month for most solopreneur workloads. With an API key, you are not limited to whatever chatbot interface someone designed. You can feed it raw data, build custom prompts, chain calls together, and integrate it directly into your actual workflow instead of copy-pasting between windows. The API key is the engine. Everything else is just a dashboard wrapped around the same engine.

One automation tool. n8n is free, self-hosted, and more powerful than Zapier for anything that involves logic. Make.com works too. The point is not which one — it is that you need exactly one. Not a different automation tool for email, one for CRM, and one for social media. One tool, connected to everything. When a lead fills out your form, n8n can call your LLM API to score the lead, draft a response, and dump it into your inbox. No human in the loop for the mechanical stuff.

Your brain. This is the piece nobody wants to hear. AI does not know your business. It does not know which customers are worth chasing, which problems are real, or what tone lands with your audience. The LLM is a very fast, very confident intern. You are still the CEO. Your judgment — what to automate, what to say, who to ignore — is the only part of the stack that actually generates revenue.

What You Just Killed

By switching to this model, you just eliminated: the AI writing tool, the AI image generator subscription, the AI chatbot for your website, the "AI sales assistant" SaaS, and probably a few others you forgot existed. All of them were calling the same APIs you just unlocked directly. You were paying a 10x markup for a UI and a system prompt.

Solopreneurs do not need enterprise AI suites. They need leverage. One key, one automation tool, and the willingness to actually learn how to use them. The rest is just UI markup.
