Ship Ugly First: The Side Project Rule That Separates Builders from Dreamers
2026-07-04 · Michael B
Most side projects never see the light of day. Not because the idea was bad. Not because the market was wrong. Because the person building it got stuck polishing something that did not need to be polished yet.
The 48-Hour Rule
Here is a rule that has served indie hackers well for years: you have 48 hours from the moment you commit to an idea to get something working in front of another human. Not a landing page. Not a waitlist. Something that does the thing — even if it looks like it was built in a cave with a box of scraps.
Why 48 hours? Because any longer and you are optimizing a fantasy. You are adding features nobody asked for. You are picking fonts. You are building for a version of your product that does not exist and may never exist.
Ugly Works
The first version of anything successful was embarrassing. The first version of Twitter was a group SMS concept called "twttr" built in two weeks. The first version of Airbnb was an air mattress on the floor of the founders' apartment with a janky WordPress site. The first version of Amazon was a guy in a garage shipping books out of his trunk.
The pattern is not that these founders were geniuses. The pattern is that they shipped something real before they were ready, and let the market tell them what to fix next.
The Real Killer of Side Projects
It is not lack of skill. It is not lack of time. It is the fear of being judged for something unfinished. But here is the thing: nobody cares about your side project as much as you think they do. The people who might use it only care if it solves their problem. They do not care if your CSS is elegant or your database schema is normalized.
Ship the ugly version. Get one real user. Watch them struggle with it. Fix the thing that made them struggle. Repeat. That is the entire playbook.
Your Move
If you have a side project sitting on your hard drive, half-built, waiting for the "right time" — the right time was last week. Ship it tonight. Send the link to three people. Let them tell you what is broken. That conversation is worth more than six months of polishing in isolation.
