Stop Calling It AI. Nobody Cares.

2026-07-09 · Michael B

Nobody wakes up and thinks, "I need to procure some artificial intelligence today."

They wake up thinking: I have 47 unread emails from clients who haven't paid. My CRM has three copies of the same contact. My calendar looks like a game of Tetris played by someone having a seizure. And I spent three hours this week manually copying data between two SaaS tools that refuse to talk to each other.

That is the actual problem. The word "AI" is just the packaging.

The disconnect

The AI industry — and I use "industry" loosely, since it currently consists of 4,000 startups all claiming to do the same thing — has spent the last two years hyping capabilities. "GPT can pass the bar exam!" "Claude can write a novel!" Cool. Your average small business owner does not need a bar exam pass or a novel. They need their invoice follow-up emails to stop taking two hours every Friday.

There is a canyon-sized gap between what AI can do and what businesses actually want it to do. And most vendors are selling on the wrong side of that gap.

Procurement is the tell

Here is a dead giveaway: when a business buys "AI," the word is always in the deck. It is there because procurement departments have a budget line for innovation, and "AI" unlocks it. But when a business buys automation — Zapier workflows, Twilio SMS routing, a Python script that cleans their CRM — nobody writes a press release about it. It just quietly saves them 15 hours a week.

The most successful implementations I have seen never used the word AI internally. One dental practice reduced front-desk calls by 60% with a chatbot. They call it "the texting thing." The staff does not care what model is behind it. They care that their phone stopped screaming.

The real question

Next time a vendor pitches you "AI-powered" anything, ask one question: What specific, boring, repetitive task does this eliminate from my team's week?

If they cannot answer it in one sentence, they are selling vibes, not value. Walk away. Your invoices will not follow themselves up, no matter how many GPUs the vendor has.

Stop buying AI. Start fixing the thing that eats 20 hours a week. Call it whatever you want after that.
