AI Won't Fix What You Don't Understand

2026-08-06 · Logic Impact AI

Here is a truth nobody selling AI wants you to hear: the technology does not make incompetent people competent. It makes competent people faster — and it makes incompetent people confidently wrong at scale.

You have seen this already. The LinkedIn post that sounds profound but says nothing. The marketing email with flawless grammar and zero strategy behind it. The ChatGPT-generated business plan that reads like McKinsey wrote it but falls apart the moment you ask a follow-up question.

AI is a force multiplier. And multiplying zero still gives you zero.

The Expertise Prerequisite

If you cannot evaluate whether an output is correct, AI is dangerous to you. Not because the models are bad — they are genuinely impressive — but because they are confident. An LLM will tell you the wrong answer with the same conviction as the right one. If you do not know enough to spot the difference, you are not leveraging AI. You are being led by it.

This is why the best AI users are already experts in their domain. The accountant who uses AI to draft tax memos still knows tax law better than the model does. The developer using Copilot can tell when the suggested code is subtly wrong. The marketer prompting ChatGPT for ad copy still knows their customer better than any training data ever will.

The Grammar Trap

AI makes everything sound good. That is the problem. Bad ideas used to reveal themselves through clumsy writing. Now every half-baked thought gets polished into something that reads like a Harvard Business Review article. The veneer of competence is free. The competence itself is not.

We are entering an era where the gap between sounding smart and being smart has never been wider. And the businesses that win will be the ones that can tell the difference.

What This Means For Your Business

  • Hire for judgment, not prompt engineering. Knowing how to talk to a model is easy. Knowing whether what it says back is useful requires actual experience.
  • Use AI on problems you already understand. If you could do it manually but it takes too long, automate it. If you have no idea how to do it at all, AI will not save you — it will just help you fail with prettier output.
  • Verify everything. Treat AI output like an intern's first draft. Talented, fast, eager to please — and wrong about 20% of the time in ways that require expertise to catch.

AI is the most powerful productivity tool since the spreadsheet. But spreadsheets did not make everyone an accountant. They gave accountants superpowers. The same rule applies here. Get good at your craft first. Then add AI.
